MAI MAI MAI is the audio/video project of Toni Cutrone, a descent into the ritualistic and symbolic depths of Southern Italy and the Mediterranean. Through a dense weave of sound and imagery, it explores the intersection of folklore, spirituality, and popular culture, where pagan rites meet Catholicism, nature meets rural magic, and ancient musical traditions collide with their contemporary transformations.

Using field recordings, archival material, and collaborations with artists from the avant scene (including Youmna Saba, Mike Cooper, Vera di Lecce, Lino Capra Vaccina, Maria Violenza, Nziria, and Go Dugong) Mai Mai Mai builds a sonic landscape rooted in what could be called Mediterranean Hauntology: not a nostalgic reverence for the past, but a noisy awakening of its ghosts, brought back to resonate through the present.
He has released music on labels such as Boring Machines, Yerevan Tapes, Not Not Fun, God Unknown, Instruments of Discipline, La Tempesta International, Maple Death Records, and WV Sorcerer Production. He also contributed electronics to GNOD’s Chapel Perilous album (Rocket Recordings), recorded during a European tour shared with the band..

2025 marks a particularly intense year for the project: I Racconti di Aretusa, a collaborative vinyl with the legendary Lino Capra Vaccina, founding member of seminal cult bands Aktuala and Telaio Magnetico (alongside Franco Battiato) a split LP with iconic Italian duo OvO have been released and the original soundtrack of the movie “Wondrous is the silence of my Master” by montenegrin director Ivan Salatić . February 2026, a brand new full-length album called Karakoz has been released via Maple Death Records: a further step into Mai Mai Mai’s ongoing radical rewriting of Mediterranean sound and myth, featuring tracks with Maya Al Khaldi, Julmud, Ussama Abu Ali, Alabaster DePlume.

Mai Mai Mai’s artistic path has never rested on laurels, it’s been a constant evolution, a profound and poetic research, a dark and dusty journey through awareness and collaborations where the heart of the process has always been about building connections and understanding people and their rituals. Mai Mai Mai’s new album ‘Karakoz’ was mostly recorded in Palestine (Ramallah and Bethlehem) in 2024 during an ongoing genocide and follows his acclaimed Southern Gothic double-album ‘Rimorso’. The album opens a new chapter for the Roma based artist, a deeply personal record where his traditional industrial miasma flows into a weeping vortex of spiritual hymns, Mediterranean hauntology and Middle Eastern chants of sorrow, carrying the despair of a battered population and matching the fighting hope with echoes of ambient bliss.
