Formed in early 2010s Dublin, Malthusian is an Irish blackened death metal band born from the mutual passion of guitarist/vocalist Matt Bree and drummer Johnny King. Rooted in a love for extreme music and driven by a desire to push sonic boundaries in a scene dominated by doom and brutal death metal, the band brought together members from On Pain of Death, Altar of Plagues, Mourning Beloveth, and Wreck of the Hesperus.
Their debut demo MMXII and the follow-up EP Below the Hengiform (2015, Invictus Productions) quickly elevated their profile through their furious, atmospheric compositions.Extensive touring across Europe and the U.S, as well as key festival appearances, cemented their reputation for delivering intense, uncompromising performances.
>Prior to the release of the debut album, Andrew Cunningham took his leave, leading to the addition of Grave Miasma guitarist Tom McKenna. No stranger to the band, having done a string of US dates with the group in 2015, McKenna was the only replacement considered. A 2019 European tour in support of Across Deaths with US blackened death manglers Suffering Hour led to the release of a split LP between the two entitled Time’s Withering Shadow (2022, Invictus Productions). 2022 also marked the departure of Pauric Gallagher, as the band continued writing for their next release, as a 3 piece.
A slight respite in 2023 to write and record a track for Irish horror movie All You Need Is Death brought the band down a new avenue and continued to flame Malthusian’s creative fires. With the 2024 addition of Federico Benini on bass, bringing a new element of the deranged to the group, the path was forged for the sophomore album The Summoning Bell (8 th august 2025, Relapse Records) recorded by Greg Chandler (Esoteric) Priory Recording Studios, Birmingham.
Now fully realized, Malthusian continues to carve a path through darkness with music that is equal parts spiritual descent, sonic torment, and apocalyptic vision.
