Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, MORTIFERUM delivers a devastating and ethereal form of death doom, channeling the spirit of the 90s into a dense and oppressive atmosphere. With haunting live performances worldwide and acclaimed releases, they stand among the premier acts in the Death Metal underground.
Mortiferum was formed by Max Bowman (guitars, vocals), and Chase Slaker (guitars, visual artist). The two guitarists had previously played in the death metal/grindcore outfit, BONE SICKNESS, one of the only bands with an old school death metal influence in the state of Washington, and certainly the only one in Olympia. With a mutual interest in Finnish and American death/doom, the two had always discussed doing something slower, with an emphasis on guitar harmonies, atmosphere, and sheer heaviness.

After leaving Bone Sickness in 2016, Bowman and Slaker spent hours playing guitar together, writing and arranging a myriad of riffs, before they got together with former drummer A. Mody, and wrote the songs that became the first demo “Altar of Decay”. They enlisted the help of Dan Fried (Excarnated Entity, Anhedonist) to fill in on bass, and recorded “Altar of Decay” in a garage in west Olympia. Tracking guitars and drums live in their own space, with part-time keyboard player Ethan Camp as the engineer, Mortiferum were able to capture the songs in their most visceral form. Shortly afterward, the band recruited Tony Wolfe as their full time bassist.

The demo was released by the band themselves and furthermore assisted by an LP release from Profound Lore Records and on cassette by Graceless Records in the US and Extremely Rotten Productions in Europe. Within a year of the release of Altar of Decay, Mortiferum embarked on tours with Spectral Voice, Hyperdontia, and Fetid, made numerous fest appearances including Killtown Deathfest: The Resurrection, Covenant, Eternal Warfare, and several others – and finally recorded and released their debut full length, DISGORGED FROM PSYCHOTIC DEPTHS. Following the release of “Disgorged,” Mortiferum only went on one east coast tour in support before the Covid-19 pandemic inevitably canceled all tours in support of the album.

With all the tours in support of “Disgorged…” vanishing, the band used this time to write and rehearse their sophomore LP, Preserved in Torment. The album was recorded and mixed in April of 2021, by Andrew Oswald, in Soundhouse Studios, Seattle, WA. The album was released in November of the same year, and was met with critical acclaim worldwide. In its first week of sales, the album soundscanned 1500 units, and landed on Billboard’s chart for emerging artists, with reviews from Pitchfork, Deaf Forever, New Noise Magazine, Decibel, Invisible Oranges, and many more.

Since the release of the album, the band has performed all over the world including several US tours, extensive European tours, and tours through Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Australia. Mortiferum has made numerous festival appearances including Maryland Deathfest, Oblivion Access, Killtown Deathfest, SWR fest in Portugal, Bloodshed Fest in Netherlands, Northwest Terror Fest, and more – sharing the stage with acts such as Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Immolation, Candlemass, Autopsy, Wolves In The Throne Room, Primitive Man, Necrot, Coffins, Blood Incantation, Spectral Voice, Mortician, and many more.
In the fall of 2022, Mortiferum recruited drummer, Jullian Rhea, known for playing in the bands FETID, CYSTIC, and most recently, as the live US drummer for Denmark’s UNDERGANG. Jullian’s spellbinding chops and unique drum sensibilities have served as the perfect kickstart to the composition of MORTIFERUM’s third album and follow up to Preserved in Torment.

In 2026, Mortiferum plans to record their third full-length album. This release is intended to stand as the epitome of everything the band has worked toward since its inception nearly ten years ago. With markedly more advanced songwriting and the mind-bending power of Jullian’s drumming fully unleashed, this material is shaping up to be the band’s most complete and devastating effort to date—both compositionally and sonically.
In addition, Mortiferum is preparing a truly seismic showcase to commemorate a decade of existence. This special event will take place in October under the title “Consecration of Torment: A Decade of Mortiferum and Caustic Wound.”
This gathering will feature an exclusively curated lineup of Mortiferum’s favorite acts from the underground—contemporary and ancient alike—brought together in celebration of shared lineage, influence, and filth. Further details remain shrouded for now, but more will be revealed in due time…
