Formed initially as a DIY 2 piece in 2017, Body Maintenance quickly moved on from its minimal drum machine beginnings into the culmination of post-punk intensity that now permeates from the quartet. The combination of glacial guitar tones pouring from James Kane’s vintage Roland amps, Zoe Mulcahy’s intricate yet aggressive reverb-laden drums and the eerie pummel of Nicholas Garth’s chorus-drenched bass are tied together with the booming chants and rhythm guitar of Riley Stafford.
The well-received self titled EP in 2021 was followed by 2023’s Beside You on Drunken Sailor records in the UK. This saw Body Maintenance hone their craft on a 3 week tour of Europe and the UK where they were greeted with warm reception in cities where the foundations of this genre were laid decades prior.
Balancing the focus of writing new material with a number of sold out local shows, the group worked throughout the subsequent year to offer their recently released LP Far From Here, also on Drunken Sailor Records, where they continue to draw on the classic 1980s UK goth motifs, all while preserving an overarching pop sweetness. Body Maintenance evoke an ill-lit tension poised between releases of ethereal delicacy in the style of The Chameleons, Echo and the Bunnymen and The Comsat Angels. Bleak, yet comforting trench coat music that attempts to provide solace in a dark and turbulent world.
