Faust: founded in 1970 in Hamburg, one of the most important protagonists of Krautrock. At the time, successful abroad but viewed with suspicion in their own country. Today, they are revered pioneers of avant-garde rock music worldwide. Faust has been around for over 50 years. Current band members include founding member Jean-Hervé Peron (bass, trumpet), Olaf Koep (drums), Jeanne-Marie Varain (front-woman and performer), Amaury Cambuzat (guitar) and Pierre Chevalier (keyboards).
The creativity and musical ideas of these five personalities merge on stage into a perfect symbiosis of sound. It is hypnotic, repetitive, melodic, uplifting, psychedelic,
threatening, dadaistic, and ethereal. Cambuzat’s guitar cuts through Koep’s archaic beats, wildly carried by Peron’s powerful bass, Chevalier’s psychedelic keyboard playing, and Jeanne-Marie Varain’s brilliant performances. Time and again, Faust return to their avant-garde roots and experiment with voices and unusual instruments. Amongst the sound generators they use are not only a cement mixer but also (empty) gas bottles, steel plates, and goat hooves. To this day, Faust continues to convey the raw energy and unpolished nature of their live performances
unchanged.
Regarding the band’s history: “There is no more mythical group than Faust”, wrote the English music eccentric Julian Cope in his genre classic Krautrocksampler. And he captured exactly what applies to both the music and the ethos of the five-member Hamburg band: very hard to grasp. For some, Faust was the best thing that ever happened to rock music, while others accused them of blatant dilettantism. Their collage-like mix of Dadaism, avant-garde rock, and improvisation polarized. When their first LP saw the light of day in 1971, Faust were the proverbial prophets in their own land: almost no one in Germany wanted to listen to their music. It was quite different in the rest of the world: Faust’s music was received with enthusiasm everywhere, and the band was repeatedly supported by the Goethe Institute (USA, Turkey, Brazil, Hungary…).
