TUJIKO NORIKO

Booking Agent : Giorgio Salmoiraghi

Tujiko Noriko is a Japanese singer, songwriter, and filmmaker based in Paris. Since the early 2000s, she has released several albums of experimental pop, singing bittersweet melodies in Japanese and English over glitchy, downtempo electronics and electro-acoustic arrangements. Early releases such as Shojo Toshi (2001) and From Tokyo to Naiagara (2003) were highly acclaimed, attracting attention from IDM and indie pop audiences alike.

Several other collaborations appeared in 2005. 28, with glitch artist Aoki Takamasa, was released by FatCat, and Blurred in My Mirror, featuring experimental musicians such as Lawrence English and Aki Onda, has been released on Room40. Additionally, Tujiko and Riow Arai issued an album titled J under the name RATN, and the singer released the EP Melancholic Beat with Portradium. In 2006, Editions Mego reissued Shojo Toshi on CD, containing the tracks from the EP I Forgot the Title, and the full-length Solo has been released on the label in 2007. Remix-heavy CD Trust was released by Japanese label Nature Bliss in 2008, and U, a collaboration with Lawrence English and John Chantler, appeared on Room40. After having worked on experimental short films throughout her career, she released her first full-length instrumental soundtrack, Kuro, in 2019. The expansive ambient work Crépuscule I & II appeared in 2023.

Having released Crépuscule I & II in early 2023 to great acclaim, Tujiko Noriko has now collaborated with filmmaker Joji Koyama to create a live audiovisual concert, presented as “Tujiko Noriko + Joji Koyama: Crepuscule Live A/V concert”. The new live set draws from the moods and themes of the album, tranforming it into a mesmeric, cinematic experience.

Joji Koyama is a Berlin-based filmmaker, animator and graphic artist. His short films, animations and music videos (including Four Tet, Mogwai and Jlin) have screened internationally, winning awards at the London Short Film Festival and British Animation Awards. In 2015 he published his first book of short visual stories, ‘Plassein’. His feature length film ‘Kuro’, written and directed with Tujiko Noriko premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival and was streamed worldwide on Mubi. Working in a variety of media and contexts, recent collaborations include indeed the aforementioned A/V project with Tujiko Noriko, based on Crépuscule I&II.

During the performance, Tujiko’s ethereal singing accents her extended, otherwordly electronic pieces, whilst Koyama (who worked on the music as well as the album artwork), expands the haunting visual world of Crépuscule – a world that is as beautiful as it is strange. The Crépuscule Live A/V concert was premiered at the electronic music and digital art festival Semibreve, in Portugal.
