If “The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera”—that gloriously unhinged late-’80s cartoon block hosted by the punked-out “Down and Dirty Dinosaurs”—had a house band, it would be STERÖID. The Hobart-based solo brainchild of Gordo Blackers (Quest Master, GeeTee, etc.), STERÖID hammers out what he proudly calls “eggy metal”: a sugar-rushed collision of punk, hard rock, and fantasy-soaked NWOBHM worship, delivered like a lost *Galtar and the Golden Lance* battle-of-the-bands episode that’s been taped over too many times.
The latest album, “Chainmail Commandos”, is STERÖID at full throttle—short, sharp blasts built for fist-pumping, sword-swinging, and yelling along by the second chorus. Hooks fly fast, riffs march harder than a dungeon patrol, and every track sounds like it’s shouting orders from inside a cartoon war room: charge forward, don’t think, don’t stop. It’s all big chants, heroic nonsense, and power-chord bravado, with choruses so sticky they feel stitched into your brain like bad armor padding.
Still dumb. Still fun. Still absolutely ruling. “Chainmail Commandos” plays like a crate of mid-’80s training-montage tapes fed through a trash compactor and enchanted by a barely competent wizard. Grab your sword, hop in the van, and let STERÖID soundtrack your next ill-advised quest—no strategy guide required.
