Since the late ’90s, Radian has been pushing the boundaries between abstract electronic sounds and acoustic instrumentation. This has been documented through extensive worldwide touring and festival appearances, as well as on seven full-length albums. Their latest record, Distorted Rooms, released by Thrill Jockey (Chicago), further expands on their unique vision of rethinking conventional forms and sounds.

While their previous album, On Dark Silent Off (2016), focused on extreme dynamic shifts and abrupt cuts, exploring the relationship between noise bursts and prominently placed moments of silence, Distorted Rooms leans more toward slow developments and repetitive structures. The original instrumentation is even more disguised, and moments of abstraction occur on sub- or meta-levels, leaving it to the listener to decide where to focus attention and which lines of development (or non-development) to follow—or rest in. It’s like offering the listener a choice of where to place the magnifying glass in a kaleidoscope of finely woven parallel sounds, structures, forms, and motives. A fleeting noise appears in the open space, rhythmic fragments are articulated with precision, and layers of noise are stacked to form unexpected, complex moments of individual beauty. Radian’s aesthetics represent a subtle disruption of continuity.

In 2014 Radian released a collaboration record with singer / songwriter Howe Gelb (of Giant Sand) on their own imprint RadianReleases, ‘Radian verses Howe Gelb’. In 2017 Radian collaborated with filmmakers Billy Roisz & Dieter Kovacic, which resulted in the release of the Film ‘Toutes Directions’ as well as live appereances with a special audio-visual program at the Donaufestival / Krems and the A L’Arme Festival / Berlin in 2018.
