MOTHERMARY makes retro-futuristic Art Pop that refuses to behave. Named after the mother of Christ — the ultimate symbol of religious hypocrisy and the impossible expectations placed on women — the bicoastal project is the brainchild of identical twins Elyse & Larena, who grew up in a strict Mormon family in Missoula, Montana, the youngest of nearly a dozen children. “It was our world… our paradigm,” Larena says about those days. “We were brainwashed.”

In November 2025, MOTHERMARY released Non-Duality, a 4-track EP that pushes their vision further. The title references the illusion of separateness — the false binary between sacred and profane, virgin and whore, suffering and beauty. It’s an invitation to step into your own godhood. The EP’s lead single “For You” comes with a music video that’s equal parts pop art and passion play: a candy-colored, campy meditation on how we’ve aestheticized Christ’s crucifixion for centuries. “Churches worldwide display this moment of absolute horror to inspire devotion,” Elyse explains. “We’re just pushing that distance from reality even further.” The “For You” music video was selected for the SXSW Film Festival, screening alongside works by Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Diplo.
