There’s multitudes contained within the sound of Mengers. The Mexico City power trio has harnessed their musical chops through energetic music with sharp edges and occasional melodic hooks. Formed in 2018 by brothers Carlos and Pablo Calderon, who take guitar and drums respectively, along with longtime friend Mauricio Suarez, Mengers released their first album GOLLY (2021) in the middle of 2019-COVID pandemic. Produced by Hugo Quezada -Exploded View, Robota- at their Progreso Nacional, Mengers delivered 12 songs full of punk and psychedelia that serves as complex critique as well as a chronicle of Mexico City’s life. GOLLY was named one of the year’s best by local underground blogs.
Their second and most ambitious album up-today, i/O was released just a year after. i/O represents an expansion of what has come to be known as the Mengers sound, with incursions on post-punk, noise and art rock. In i/O- taken from the “on/off” switches on most electronic devices- Mengers reflect on how life doesn’t deal in such duality but rather how opposites tend to complement each other.
i/O has been critically acclaimed listing on the best latin albums/songs of 2022 by Rolling Stone, Remezcla, KEXP, as well as many mexican newspapers, radio stations and biogs. By 2023 Mengers joined forces with Quezada again, releasing a collaborative album together called “VS”. Contrary to what one might expect, VS’s songs are anything but predictable, delivering some of the most melodic compositions that both sides have attempted so far. It was edited independently. Limited to 300 copies on vinyl, the album will be sold exclusively on their upcoming tours in Mexico and Europe.
By now, Mengers is one of the most forward thinking bands in the game, a force of nature that will continue to give inspiring music for years to come.
