Father Dionysios Tabakis is a Greek Orthodox priest, composer and sonic explorer based in Nafplio, Greece. Raised in Piraeus and immersed in Byzantine culture from an early age, he began studying Byzantine music during his school years and later taught himself a wide range of traditional instruments, including the ney, oud, lyra, cümbüş, tanbur and zurna.

Alongside his ministry at the Church of Panagitsa in Nafplio, Father Tabakis has spent years recording independently at home, developing a deeply personal musical language outside conventional professional or academic structures. Since launching his YouTube channel in 2012, he has shared hundreds of recordings that move freely between Byzantine music, devotional song, traditional instrumentation, amplified guitar and electronic experimentation.

His debut album, Paradise Metal, brings these long-running explorations together in a vivid collision of Byzantine chant, doom and drone metal, ambient music, techno, dubstep and religious song. Recorded largely alone using fretless electric guitar, traditional instruments and modest DIY equipment, the album transforms ancient modes and sacred themes into music that feels both timeless and radically contemporary.

Released by Athens based label Heat Crimes in collaboration with Elhellel, Paradise Metal quickly found an international audience and received widespread acclaim across the global music press. Father Tabakis’s immersive live performances extend the album’s world onto the stage, bringing together ritual, distortion, contemplation and an open-hearted spirit of musical discovery.
