Au Pairs

Au Pairs are a post-punk band originally formed in 1978. By 1983, the original line-up had dissolved. After a long hiatus, the band has reformed with a new line-up that includes original frontperson Lesley Woods.

The current formation features Estella Adeyeri (of Big Joanie) on bass, Alex Ward (known for work with Thurston Moore and Pere Ubu) on guitar, and Jem Doulton (also associated with Thurston Moore) on drums.

They are currently undertaking their first major UK tour in over 40 years, revisiting their 1981 debut album Playing with a Different Sex while also presenting new material ahead of a planned recording later this year. In February 2026, the band performed a series of sold-out shows in Arnhem, Venlo, Leiden, and Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

Formed at the end of the 1970s post-punk era, Au Pairs were noted for combining politically engaged and feminist themes with a rhythmic, dance-oriented sound influenced by funk. Their work has often been described as ahead of its time.

The current line-up brings a renewed energy to the band’s material, highlighting its continued relevance in a contemporary context. Their live performances are direct and engaging—rhythm-driven, tightly executed, and focused on maintaining a strong connection with the audience. The result is a set that feels immediate and immersive, leaving audiences energized and fully engaged.
