The moniker Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice is drawn from the initials of bandleader and creative driver Dougal Shaw (D.R. Shaw). Emerging from the fertile creative ecosystem of Melbourne, Australia in 2018 the once-solo project now operates as a collective, a regular 5-piece that has expanded to 11 at its peak.
The pace of the project was established right from the jump. In 2019, Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice released their debut album, The West, just three months after playing their first live show. A statement of intent: wiry post-punk packed with political barbs. They proceeded to tour Australia four times that year alone, setting a precedent for the years to follow. Even when the world ground to a halt, the output didn’t stop. 2020’s twin mixtapes Scomo Goes To Hawaii and While Aus Burns captured the furious zeitgeist of a country in crisis, earning an international vinyl release pressed jointly by Swish Swash Records in France and Marthouse Records in Australia. As DSUP’s underground presence has grown, so has its international footprint. The band’s critically acclaimed second album, Remember The Future? Vol. 2 & 1, arrived in 2021 via Germany’s Erste Theke Tontraeger and Marthouse Records, earning them Music Victoria award nods, PBS feature album and plays across US, UK and European radio. It landed them their first international tour: 21 shows across Europe/UK tour in 2022.
2023’s Live From The Future captured the live band in full flight, followed shortly by the introspective Bubble EP. A seamless transition from full power rock n roll to woozy outsider-pop. But it was their third studio album, Total Reality (2024)—again on ETT and Marthouse—that catapulted the “weirdo punk masterminds” firmly into the limelight. Their art-punk and krautrock explorations landed a spot on Rolling Stone’s Top 50 Albums of the Year—who dubbed them “one of the most important bands in Melbourne”—and earned a coveted spot on Henry Rollins’ annual Top 10 Albums. The record sparked a mammoth run of 4 Australian Tours, a New Zealand tour and their second and third runs across Europe/UK, performing 80+ shows across 10 countries in a year and cementing the band’s romantic, old-school “working band” mentality.
While Dr Sure’s Unusual Practice may ask fans to dig a little deeper—having opted out of the exploitative streaming machine—they are never far from a stage. They have spent the last eight years in a state of near-perpetual motion, mounting 21 domestic tours and launching multiple international campaigns, including their most recent run through South-East Asia. This unwavering DIY work ethic has built a loyal global cult following, earned them festivals like Meredith (AU), Binic (France), Rocketmen (Portugal) and Found Dead (Indonesia) and support slots alongside heavyweights like Cosmic Psychos, Tropical Fuck Storm, TISM, and Ty Segall.
In May 2027, DSUP will release their fourth album More Is The Law—the band’s first “studio album”—via King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s p(doom) records.
The definitive new statement will be unleashed live throughout June 2027, as the band tour Europe/UK supporting King Gizzard on their summer run.
True to form, the Practice continues to push the boundaries of what an independent band can be—uncompromising, unhinged, unusual.
