Beherit

Beherit, founded in Rovaniemi, Finland in 1989, is one of the most distinctive and influential acts in early Nordic black metal. Created by Marko Laiho (Nuclear Holocausto Vengeance) together with bassist Jari Vaarala (Demonic Fornication) and drummer Jari Pirinen (Sodomatic Slaughter), the band emerged from Finland’s late 1980s underground scene with the ambition to push extreme metal to its limits.

Formation and Early Development (1989–1991) Beherit’s earliest years were shaped by the international tape trading network, where their raw demos — Seventh Blasphemy, Demonomancy and Dawn of Satan’s Millennium — gained rapid attention. These recordings established the group’s reputation for minimalist violence, primitive atmosphere, and uncompromising intent. In 1991, the German label Turbo Music released “The Oath of Black Blood” without the band’s permission. Despite the unauthorized nature of the compilation, it became one of black metal’s most important early releases and played a major role in solidifying Beherit’s cult status.

Drawing Down the Moon and Musical Expansion (1993–1994) Beherit reached a defining moment with Drawing Down the Moon (1993), released by Spinefarm Records. The album introduced ritualistic vocals, stripped down riff structures, and atmospheric synth textures, resulting in a sound that remains unique within the genre. Though initially met with mixed responses, the album has since become widely regarded as a black metal classic. After its release, Laiho began moving away from traditional metal and toward experimental electronic and dark ambient music. Under the Beherit name, he released H418ov21.C (1994) and Electric Doom Synthesis (1995), both of which explored new sonic territories and marked the end of the band’s early era.

Reactivation and Engram (2008–2009) Beherit was revived in the late 2000s when Laiho returned to black metal–oriented songwriting. Joined by original drummer Pirinen and long time associate Pasi Kolehmainen, the group recorded Engram (2009). The album was praised for recapturing the spirit of early Beherit while incorporating newfound maturity and clarity. At this stage the project remained studio focused. More than three decades after the band’s last traditional stage performances, Beherit announced a return to live activity for 2024. The performing lineup consisted of:
• Marko Laiho – vocals, electronics
• Jari Pirinen – drums
• Pasi Kolehmainen – bass
• Juha Laine – guitar
The comeback began at the Rites of North festival in Oulu and was followed by selected appearances in Finland, Japan, Austria, the United States and Latin America. These performances introduced a new generation of listeners to Beherit’s legacy while reestablishing the band as a significant force in extreme metal history.

Across more than thirty years, Beherit has maintained a reputation for artistic independence, innovation, and intensity. From its primitive early demos to the atmospheric experimentation of the mid 1990s and the modern-era revival, the band’s discography reflects a continual evolution that has left a deep imprint on the global extreme metal landscape.
