Formed in 2015, YEAR OF THE COBRA became a fast-rising star in the stoner doom cosmos for good reason. The powerhouse duo, consisting of Amy Tung Barrysmith (vocals/bass) and Jon Barrysmith (drums), create a vast, larger than life sound aesthetic. Their songs drift from classic doom laments to skyscraping riff architecture, blending anthemic rock moments seamlessly with transfiguring psychedelia.
With a lean configuration that allowed for quick progress, the band enjoyed a rapid ascent, with releases on underground tastemaker labels DHU Records, STB Records and Magnetic Eye Records, and live schedule that included numerous US and European tours with festival slots at Hell Over Hammaburg, Psycho Las Vegas, Freak Valley, Monolith on the Mesa and Maryland Doom Fest.
YOTC capped their rise by signing to noted European metal label Prophecy Productions, and entered the studio with famed Seattle producer/engineer Jack Endino (Windhand, High on Fire, Soundgarden), who stated his intention to make their next record sound “even more massive.”
The result was 2019’s Ash and Dust, an album that capitalizes on YOTC’s pummeling power and sultry ambiance while ambitiously pushing things beyond previous outings.
From the title track’s monolithic crush to delicate doom ballads like “At the Edge,” the album shows why this twosome has ridden a wave of relentless support and enthusiasm since their genesis in the heavy underground.
