A man with his guitar. A deserted stage, blue smoke in a white spotlight, otherwise emptiness. A timeless aesthetic emanates from this image—an aesthetic of loneliness and immersion. Jerome Reuter lives this aesthetic. It is just him, his voice and his guitar. That is all it takes to silence a concert hall. He is a driven man, a seeker who has been expressing himself musically with his project ROME since 2005, exploring his inner life and the world around him across nearly 20 albums.

ROME is the stark film-noir counterpart to a stimulus-flooded blockbuster: real, pure, and charged with cultural significance. With Gates Of Europe, Reuter carved a work from the heart that is at once past, present and future of ROME—an album of profound intensity about the war in Ukraine, written as both a love letter to Europe and a call to stand against despots and warmongers.

For many years, ROME has combined American folklore with chanson and the fast-paced tristesse of English post-punk. Reuter once called it “Chanson Noir.” Above it all towers his unmistakable deep voice. Early works such as Berlin and Nera were driven by searing post-industrial sounds; from Flowers From Exile onward, ROME moved toward a unique folk noir borne by a deep poetry of longing, while continuing to welcome experimental and electronic influences.

Reuter’s concept albums draw on literature, history and struggles for freedom, from William S. Burroughs and Bertolt Brecht to the French Resistance and southern Africa. Multilingual lyrics and relentless tours from Jerusalem to Saigon reveal an artist devoted to building bridges and uncovering the hidden currents between nations. His songs move between truth and myth, uniting listeners across ages, genres and walks of life.
