Useless Eaters is the long-running project of Seth Sutton, whose work spans crude punk energy and minimalist experimentalism. The project originated in 2008 in Memphis, releasing material on influential underground labels, including Jay Reatard’s Shattered Records, John Dwyer of Osees’ Castle Face, and Goner Records. Over the course of its career, the project has amassed a substantial discography, including eight full-length albums and seventeen EPs.
From 2013 to 2017, Useless Eaters operated out of a San Francisco warehouse space that also served as Sutton’s home and creative hub. When the city shut down this space, the project entered a hiatus, and Sutton relocated to Berlin. Over five years, he immersed himself in Berlin’s vibrant underground scene, collaborating and performing with acts such as Idiota Civilizzato, Glaas, Exit Group, and ÖPNV, further refining his sonic and visual approach.
In 2022, Sutton returned to California and immediately revived Useless Eaters with renewed focus. Over the past eighteen months, the band has completed two European tours and a series of California shows.
Their first new material in nearly a decade is slated for release this fall (2025) on Goodbye Boozy Records, which originally issued their debut vinyl—the “Agoraphobic” single—in 2008. Additional releases are planned with two of today’s most vital underground labels: Under The Gun Records (Los Angeles) and Total Punk (Portland). Seventeen years after their beginnings, Useless Eaters continue to be a vital presence at the intersection of punk, experimentation, and visual art under Seth Sutton’s singular vision.
